NEW YEAR NO RESOLUTIONS

53% of Americans made a resolution at the beginning of 2018 to save more money. What was your resolution? Do you even remember? Did you know that by the second week of February 80% of all resolutions have already failed? So why do we continue to make them? Where did this tradition even come from? It is said that the first recorded New Year’s events are traced back to the Babylonians, so we accredit resolutions with the Babylonians as well. But what if instead of creating a “resolution” we just strive to change our perspective?

See the reason that 80% of resolutions even fail so quickly is because we aren’t mentally prepared for the change. We make this “commitment” self-consciously but don’t actually prepare ourselves for them. After 6 weeks of little to no commitment, we give up thinking that it’s no use and give in to the disappointment of failing.

So why change of perspective? Well a “resolution” is so firm and bold. You feel the pressure of it. But if you just strive to change your perspective, you don’t feel as committed so you might not fail as quickly. I’m not saying you are guaranteed to have success but at least you tried, and you can always pick up and try again halfway through the year- because I mean who tries a resolution halfway through the year.

Now how do we want to shift our perspective? It can be more ways than one. It can be broad, or it can be narrow. Think about SMART goals when thinking about this. Be sure that it is something that you feel like is possible.

In 2019, I’m going to strive to change my perspective and enjoy the little things in life. Stop worrying about your next “big move” and appreciate where you are at right now. If you have the pleasure of being off tomorrow, find a way to enjoy it. Whether it is spent with family and friends, or just having some “me” time. But remember, we’re closed tomorrow so you can’t come see us. We’ll see you on Wednesday when we open back up.

We hope you have a safe and happy New Year! We look forward to serving you in 2019!
