SPRING = PLANTING SEASON FOR FARMERS

Spring = Planting Season for Farmers

It’s that time of year again! Put away those coats and dig out the shorts and flip flops- Spring is here in the Southeast. The days are longer which means more time outside. We’ve looked forward to this season all winter long- well besides the pollen, we could have done without all of that.
When I think of Spring, I of course think of our farmers and planting season. Planting season is so crucial for our farmers. What to plant? When to plant? How much to plant?

These tiny little seeds that are about to be planted are the most prayed over, the most tended to, and the most thought over decision that this farmer has made this year. This farmer will spend his spring preparing the soil for something that could flourish or not. For the next 6 months or so, these seeds will be closely monitored. For the next 6 months this farmer will watch the weather, pray for rain or for sun, and spend countless hours in his tractor moving irrigations systems and spraying his crops. It’s also time for spring hay to be harvested.

So why did I just tell you all of this? You might think there is nothing you can do for our relentless farmers during this spring season, but I’m here to tell you one small thing you can do.

With planting season comes moving from field to field, driving tractors and moving equipment. If you’ve ever sat in the cab of a tractor, you know there is limited visibility. If you haven’t, check out the picture below.
While it can be frustrating to get behind them, respect them just like you do any other driver and vehicle on the road. Only pass when it is safe for both you and the farmer. At the end of the day, they want to make it home to their families just like you do.
Let’s do our best to keep our farmers safe this planting season.
