BEAT THE HEAT THIS SUMMER WITH THESE 6 TIPS

Bring. On. Summer. That’s what we were all saying in February, right? I think we can collectively agree that we did not ask for this hot of summer though. It was so hot in June that the EARTH (yes, the whole Earth) broke a record for the hottest temperature in the month of June- with records going back to 1880…holy hot tamale.

Heat advisories are being issued daily but we know that grass still has to be cut, the cows need feeding, and the fence needs fixing.  So today I want to share a few tips and tricks on how to beat the heat and stay safe for the remainder of these hot months.

  • Take advantage of summer fruits. Better than watermelon at 92%, tomatoes are 94% water. Strawberries are also 92% and cantaloupe is 90%. These summer fruits provide a great way to stay hydrated and enjoy a tasty snack.
  • One way to avoid dehydration is to eat a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. The oats absorb the water you used to cook them in and it provides a source of hydration. Throw some fresh berries into it and you’ve got a great start to your day.
  • Wearing proper gear and sunscreen is key. You want to wear a wide brim hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. Protect your skin by using a high SPF sunscreen.
  • Take breaks to cool down. If you start to feel too hot, rest and try to cool down immediately. It is best to rest for 15 minutes after each hour of work.
  • Drink water every 10-15 minutes. It is recommended that the average person drink at least half a gallon of water every day in order to stay hydrated.
  • If you have any type of John Deere equipment, you can go down to your local SunSouth and purchase a canopy for your mower or tractor. Of course, we recommend our cab tractors that are equipped with A/C for all your outdoor tasks.

Here in the south we have about two more months of this summer weather. Don’t let the heat get to you. Take precautions to beat the heat and stay hydrated!
