IT'S GAME TIME

Whether it’s hometown Friday night lights or College Game Day, the end of August marks the beginning of a favorite season in the south… football season.

Now those of you who might not be crazy about football might just be excited for cooler temps- but that’s okay because I mean we all are, right?

For the next few months, high school football fields and college stadiums will be packed with loved ones cheering on their favorite player. An eager team that has practiced for months will take the field and play their hearts out for 4 quarters. Meanwhile a squad of joyful girls will chant and cheer them on with pride. “Friday Night Lights” or “Saturdays Down South” is what some of us lived for. We looked forward to proudly representing our school on a 100 yard field of grass. For me, I learned a lot on those high school fields as a cheerleader. I learned the game of football… learned that 1st and 10 was good, 4th and goal meant business, and a good field goal kicker can be very important.

Okay so why am I rambling about football? Well because football to me is more than just boys with an odd shaped ball. It’s family time. It’s pride. It’s personal growth. And so much more.

My family gathers around the TV on Saturdays and for the next 3 or so hours, we bond. At a time when family time seems to be dwindling across the country, it’s the little moments like these that still exist in the south that brings the family back together. We take pride in cheering for a team that we believe in. We watch as those players learn valuable lessons on leadership, teamwork, and responsibility. These teams take away so much more than just a W or L at the end of the night.

It’s here, no time to waste. Get those chores done. Hop on that John Deere mower and get the grass cut. Grab that STIHL blower and blow off the patio so you can set the TV up. Because it’s time- it’s game time!
